4 Ways to Love Your Heart for American Heart Month

4 Ways to Love Your Heart for American Heart Month

As we are nearing the end of February (how is that possible, already?) and closing another American Heart Month, we urge you to take a moment and reflect: Are you taking good care of yourself? According to the American Heart Association, heart disease continues to be the greatest health threat to Americans and is still the leading cause of death worldwide. It is preventable, though. So do us a favor and take care of yours … we’d like to keep you around!

Here are four ways you can do that:

1. Get plenty of sleep. Everyone likes to sleep, right? It’s just too bad we don’t know we’re actually enjoying it while it’s happening! All kidding aside, we tend to overlook the value of sleep and its contribution to our overall health and well-being. It’s probably tough to get in the recommended seven or more hours of sleep every night but going to bed and waking up at consistent times is a big benefit. And having a dark, cold room to sleep in definitely provides for a more restful experience.

Fun fact: We burn calories during our sleep. Now that’s certainly a perk of catching some zzz’s.

2. Exercise often. Every single day may be a bit of a commitment given this busy world we’re traveling through, but fitting in a little bit of activity a few times a week is definitely a step in the right direction. After all, it’s been documented that exercise builds bones and muscles, reduces stress (our favorite benefit!), and maintains a healthy blood pressure.

3. Maintain a healthy diet. There’s not too much to say about this one. We all know eating healthy is the best fuel for our bodies. This also includes limiting alcohol intake. But don’t deprive yourself of things you enjoy. All things in moderation! Give yourself a day to “cheat” and indulge in your favorite dish, snack, or dessert.

4. Surround yourself with positivity. Positive thoughts, positive people. Nobody likes a negative Nancy. Maintaining positive thoughts and surrounding ourselves with people we love and who bring light into our world help sustain a positive mental attitude, which is a big contributor to our overall health.

Although American Heart Month only has one dedicated month to its name, we think you should consider it American Heart Day…today and each and every day. Happy health-ing!
