An educator’s identity is ever evolving and changing as they gain more experience in education. Intentional focus is needed so that educators can become aware of their various identities and how they see themselves in relation to their profession, community, and the world around them.Identity impacts various aspects of teaching as it influences educator performance, job satisfaction, and belief in one’s ability to be a successful educator, as noted in a <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00220574221101375" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2022 article.</a> An individual’s identity is in constant negotiation with the environment and the community around them to influence their perspectives and how they may see themselves. The article notes that an educator’s identity, “is the basis for meaning making and decision making... Teacher education must begin, then, by exploring the teaching self”.1 Although educators aim to be unbiased, their experience will inform classroom practices and critical concepts within the classroom.<h3>The Role of Reflective Practices in Educator Growth</h3>As the guide for students, educators guide students through critical ideas within the student’s journey.&nbsp;One of the critical ideas includes fostering student identity through inclusive practices that will foster belonging, like cultural identities, within the classroom.In a 2015 research study, Tessa Nicole Mauro noted that as the population of students of color grows, teachers of color are decreasing. Due to this gap, it becomes challenging for educators to culturally connect to their students. The author notes that developing a culturally relevant teaching perspective allows educators, and/or pre-service teachers to be able to develop needed skills, perspectives and background information on multicultural education that will allow educators to connect and develop student-teacher relationships.2This idea resonated in the Ted Talk, <a href="https://youtu.be/EXd7MW_L1_w?si=NUccyRWBhYXKWesS" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">“Culturally Responsive Education: What's in a Name?”,</a> where author T. Van Ry discusses the importance of becoming culturally aware so that educators can better serve students. Van Ry stressed that cultural identity is a way of identifying yourself within a larger community that acknowledges its customs, history and knowledge. This includes identifying personal biases and is the first step in examining one's own beliefs, which helps in becoming aware of internal attitudes and personal history. Van Ry notes, “We should focus on our students and the stories that they bring to our classrooms. It is a powerful experience to explore our identities and our truth.”3The National Association for Multicultural Education <a href="https://www.nameorg.org/learn/how_do_i_know_if_my_biases_aff.php" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(NAME) article</a> notes that biases can lead to educators unknowingly reinforcing negative stereotypes and negative school climates. One of the research-based tools which may be used to identify cultural bias is <a href="https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Implicit Association Test</a> (IAT), which provides insights to social biases and other subconscious attitudes.<h3>Professional Development and Coaching: Essential Learning Support for Educators</h3>Reflective practice is a cornerstone of effective teaching. By regularly assessing their methods, interactions, and outcomes, educators can gain invaluable insights into their practice.The 2009 article by <a href="http://nameorg.org/learn/photos/Chen_et_al._2009_Becoming.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chen, Nimmo, and Fraser</a> focuses on “self-study” which focuses on self-awareness, physical environment, pedagogical environment, and relationship with families and community.4Continuous learning is essential for educators to stay at the forefront of their field. Professional development and coaching provide crucial support, offering opportunities for educators to expand their knowledge, refine their skills, and stay updated with the latest educational trends and strategies.6<h3>Conclusion</h3>Teacher identity is “complex and multidimensional”, so there is still no definitive consensus on how to define it.1 Remember that identity is ever changing and evolving which provides continuous opportunities for growth.<h3>References:</h3>1.
