<p>Physician compensation is on the rise post-pandemic. In 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (<a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physicians-and-surgeons.htm">BLS</a>) reported doctors&rsquo; median salary as $208,000. <p>Doctors in the state of Kentucky earned the most on average ($364,000), followed by Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and Oregon, according to <a href="https://www.medscape.com/today">Medscape</a>.</p>

<h2>Locum Tenens Doctor Pay</h2>

<p>Doctors who work as locum tenens contractors have the potential to earn even more than their salaried counterparts. Locum tenens doctors are usually considered 1099 independent contractors rather than W-2 employees. Because they work for themselves, locum tenens doctors forego certain benefits of being an employee, but in return, they can earn a higher per-hour rate, as much as 25%, depending on their assignment.</p>

<p>Doctors have incredibly high job security. In 2022, the unemployment rate for doctors was just 0.3% (<a href="https://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/physician">U.S. News</a>), while the overall unemployment rate for all U.S. jobs was around 3.5 to 4%.</p>

<p>The demand for doctors is expected to increase.
