This time, we’re spotlighting one of our outstanding substitute teachers, Ruby M.</p><p>Here’s why Ruby decided to become a substitute teacher, what she enjoys most about working with the Cross Country Education team and schools, and what advice she has for subs just embarking on their careers.</p><h3>Why did you become a Substitute Teacher?</h3><p>I became a substitute teacher because I wanted to expand my networking skills and create stronger relationships in the educational field. Also, the flexibility it provides for my schedule allows me to go to school and work at the same time without complications.</p><h3>What do you like about Cross Country Education?</h3><p>What I like about Cross Country Education is the support that is provided by everyone and the implementation of different resources that’ll help us as educators all around, such as coaching and collaborating.</p><h3>What have you liked about your experience working at schools with Cross Country Education?</h3><p>Cross Country Education provides educators with opportunities to create a sense of community, work through conflict, and a form of inclusion in schools.</p><h3>What kind of advice would you give to those starting out in your field?</h3><p>The advice I would give someone starting out in the field is to be yourself and learn to be patient with everyone. No significant learning can occur without significant relationships, and if those aren’t created with students first, then class time will seem a bit more challenging in certain situations. Other advice I have is to first seek to understand others as opposed to being understood. This will create a safe space for everyone in the class and will be more student-driven, which will be beneficial in their school performance. Lastly, being an educator is hard, but not impossible.
