Making future aged care plans is an issue that warrants heightened attention. Today, nearly 20 million adults in the U.S. require assistance completing self-care and other daily tasks due to physical, cognitive, developmental, and/or behavioral conditions. This number includes about 17 million individuals living in their community, 1.5 million in nursing homes, and nearly one million in residential care. Individuals with personal assistance needs have to depend on family members, friends, and neighbors—a cadre of more than 43 million caregivers whose economic contribution is $470 billion. But for those with limited local caregiving networks or more complex needs, paid direct care workers are a lifeline.1Cross Country Workforce Solutions Group surveyedi 500 U.S. people to gauge how those aged 50 years or more are preparing for the care they will need as they grow older. We learned that most respondents would prefer to remain at home with support (70%). In comparison, 51% would like to stay at home with no support, and 37% said they preferred to move into a transitional services facility, such as a retirement community, based on their level of need. The remainder of the participants selected "something else" as a preferred option and frequently reported moving in with family.<h2>Evaluating Options</h2>For some people, the decision to reside in a nursing home or long-term health facility is the only option. Age, income, familial support, social activity, and functional or mental difficulties are all factors in determining the best care path for each person. These facilities are staffed with caring and professional staff who genuinely make a difference. These types of facilities meet the needs of individuals that require a higher level of care, but it doesn't make sense for others. Additionally, Medicare has tightened the requirements for entry into nursing homes. Therefore, the individual must have a specific diagnosis that requires a higher level of care to meet the Medicare funding criteria.In a long-term care setting, there is a higher chance of patients outnumbering caregivers, resulting in seniors not receiving the care they need. For example, one study 2 found that most nursing homes (63%) failed to provide sufficient staffing to meet their residents' needs. Additionally, low staff-to-resident ratios, high turnover, and high occupancy rates correlate with higher Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) rates.3 In contrast, by design, the in-home caregiving model ensures that individuals receive sufficient personal one-on-one care.For many, in-home caregiving provides an alternative to offer more independence while optimizing individual care. It centers healthcare around a person's life rather than their life around healthcare.
