Most locations will want nurses with at least one year of experience to ensure they can practice and have confidence when delivering patient care.

Next, you will need to determine the geographical location(s) in which you might be interested in working. Are you looking for a major city or a rural area? Do you have family or friends in a location that you would like to be near?

After you call Cross Country Nurses, you will be assigned a recruiter. This recruiter will become an important part of the entire process. They will help you gather all of the necessary documents (license for the state in which you will practice, health statements, compliance and credentialing documents needed for your assignment, etc.). Your recruiter is an extension of you!

You will want to make certain that all documents are always up to date. I encourage travelers to keep their own portfolios, so you always have all your current documents at your fingertips.

You and your recruiter will need to speak about housing. Will you need a place? Are you staying with family or friends? Do you want to obtain your own housing? Do you have an RV or motorhome and plan to stay in it during your assignment? There are many options for you to consider.

You and your recruiter will talk about your health insurance coverage, direct deposit, housing, requirements, any documents needed and everything you might need to have a wonderful experience. Your recruiter is an expert -- they do this every day and have helped many people through the process.

Most assignment are 13 weeks in length. However, sometimes we have locations asking for longer or shorter assignments. So, please consider how long you want to be on a travel assignment. If your manager likes you at your current assignment, you might be asked to consider extending your stay.
